We all know and I think really believe when the Bible says that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Why, then is it so difficult to be humble? It is a real problem in churches. Unfortunately it is more and more visible among ministers than any one els. Even in my own church we have one particular member who really tries to be the corpse at every funeral and the bride at every wedding. What place is left for Jesus? Are we so jealous for attention that we will push the Lord out of the way to make sure we are in the spot light?
The best way to remain humble is to remain aware of the awesomeness of God. See the all encompassing beauty and power and majesty of the creator of all things humbles all who truly see Him. Seeing God for who and what He is really shows us who and what we are. Everything in a worship service or Bible study or visitation should be done to edify the whole body, not to make sure we stand out, to show the glory of Jesus, not to show how brightly we shine. We must turn our focus away from ourselves and back to where it belongs. Nobody was ever saved by my quick wit or my ability to sing louder than everyone and certainly not because I always have something to say at all times. People are saved by an encounter with the risen Lord of glory and He should not have to compete for air time. Glorify god and lift one another up into the shining glory of the Lord our God.
